Test used for isolation and identification of bacteria considered pathogenic. Susceptibility test is not performed as there is no correlation between antimicrobial concentrations achieved in topical application and concentrations tested in laboratory.
Test Preparation Instructions
Cleanse skin around eye with mild antiseptic. Gently remove makeup and ointment with sterile saline. Instruct patient to sit with head bent back while looking upwards. Pull the lower lid downwards and brush the swab lightly with a rotating motion from the conjunctiva across the inside of the lower lid towards the outside corner of the eye. State if topical treatment applied prior to collection. Indicate left or right on the swab and the requisition.
